Lafayette Hill Community History
Lafayette Hill is part of Whitemarsh Township which was originally settled over 300 years ago. Early inhabits were members of the Leni Lenapa tribe with the English and Welsh Quakers being the first European settlers.
In 1686 vast lime deposits were discovered in neighboring Oreland and by 1693 a kiln was erected to process it. This resulted in a highway being buile from the post of the Delaware River to the kiln, Limekiln Pike (Route 152), which is still in existence today.
Whitemarsh Township also played a part during the Revolution. During December 1777 there were skirmishes between the Revolutionaries and Eneral Howe's troops in the Flourtown. St Peter's Lutheran Church in Lafayette Hill was used as a stable and battery by both sides.
After World War II a demand fro new housing made the farmland of Whitemarsh appear very attractive. Whitemarsh Township's location adjacent to Philadelphia proved very attractive, and that hold true even today.
Population of Whitemarsh Township according to the 2000 Census is 16,702 Total housing units is 6,372.
